How Every Student Can Benefit from Learning to Code

Many of the most in-demand and high paying careers these days require some degree of computer programming. Whether as an app designer, a drone programmer, or a data scientist, knowing how to code will make students competitive candidates for the job market of the future.

But beyond the concrete computer skills that coding provides, the process of learning how to code can be valuable for brain development, even for students who want to become doctors, lawyers, or teachers.

How computational thinking makes students better problem solvers

Why is that? Well, because the computational thinking that is required for computer programming can easily enhance one’s ability to succeed in other content areas as well. This means that a crime scene investigator with some computer programming experience might be better suited to crack a tough case than one who’s never written code, all because of how computer programming trains your brain to solve problems.

Essentially, computational thinking (the kind of thinking used in computer programming) involves breaking down a big problem into smaller, more manageable steps in order to solve it. Coding trains your brain to look for patterns and identify discrete parts of a problem that it knows how to solve, instead of getting overwhelmed by the big picture and deeming a solution impossible.

This is a valuable skill in any number of professions, even those that have nothing to do with technology. Being able to think in an organized fashion to and apply logic to solve problems will help students through and beyond college as managers, team members, and executives.

How to teach students about programming (when you don’t know it yourself)?

So how can teachers (even those who don’t have any coding experience themselves) introduce students to computer programming?
